St. Patrick's Day is almost here and we kicked it off on friday with one of the great running and walking traditions in Savannah - the Shamrock 5K and Kids Run benefiting the March of Dimes. I don't know how many people showed me the weather radar on their phones starting hours before the event up until the end of the awards ceremony. Folks were telling me to hurry and get the awards done because the rain was right around the corner. All I could do is continue at the pace we were going and count on the "Luck of the Irish" and guess what, it never rained, even through break down and on the way home.
Now that the race is over, it is time to focus on what is in store for the town this entire week. People are dressed in green, folks are wandering around not looking both ways while crossing the street, driving the wrong way on our famous one way roads, and all the fountains have turned green. Yes... it is time for St. Patrick's Day!
I had a friend of mine tell me one time that you're not really a Savannahian until you get caught during low tide and have to push your boat through oyster beds and get your legs all cut up, infected, then heal up, (which HAS happened to me - only once though), thanks Jim! Even though I am not from Savannah and I spent my high school years and a few years after that in Beaufort, SC (the best time of my life by the way). I have always felt at home here, and I am trying to do my best to make a little difference with what I know to this city I call home.
I have been made an offer this week to include the Fleet Feet Frog in the St. Patrick's Day parade this wednesday. As much as I would like to tell you that they want it because it's affiliated with Fleet Feet, I can't. I was asked by a gentlemen who wants to use the Fleet Feet Frog to honor the Savannah Navy League, which includes the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Coming from a Marine Corps family, I not only said yes but find it flattering and I will be more than honored to take these gentlemen through the parade route on wednesday morning in the Fleet Feet Frog. I am proud to let them get all the attention, ovations, waves, and kisses they deserve. I have seen it and I know the parade route is lined with hundreds of thousands of people; so if you are out there, look for the Fleet Feet Frog decorated up for the Savannah Navy League. Even though I am not from Savannah, I could not be more proud to honor our military, and feel as close to being a Savannahian as possible. Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone, see you wednesday!
