"And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
but I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
a little of the glory of, well time slips away
and leaves you with nothing mister but
boring stories of glory days"
-Bruce Springsteen
Oh yes who doesn’t want to reach back and relive some of the glory days of running? I remember running like I could barely feel the ground when I was younger, and the pain was nearly nonexistent no matter how fast or how far. Now I sometimes feel like the ground beneath me reaches up to meet me before my foot hits the ground just to create more impact. When I get injured these days, I wonder if I will ever recover to run fast or even steady. I think they call it growing old gracefully but I don’t see or feel anything graceful about it. And no matter how many marathons I run, how many tempo runs, speed workouts long or short; nothing replaces the thrill of competition and seeing how far you can push yourself. Road race with a thousand or more, ten thousand, twenty-five thousand, just does not replace the feeling of racing and running on grass XC style.
In two weeks you get your chance to relive those glory days of running as we kickoff the running season in Savannah with the Cross Country Kick-Off Classic August 28th at Daffin Park. If you have not seen a High School Cross Country meet, come out August 28th for a “Run Dirty Saturday” to run, volunteer, or just cheer on these athletes. No time-outs, no half-time, no quarters, just hundreds of kids running for themselves and team pride through grass, mud, water jumps, and an exciting stadium finish with music blasting, fans, friends, teammates and coaches, cheering them into the finish line; every position counts. The whole day kicks off with an open 5K for the public at 7am. You will run the same course as the high school athletes, and when you’re done, stick around for the HS meet, and show your support for HS XC as teams run from all over Georgia, South Carolina, and a special guest team from Joliet High School in Joliet Illinois.
So come and relive your HS XC days, or if you didn’t run XC in HS, come on out and have a “Run Dirty Saturday” with Fleet Feet Sports Savannah, Saucony, and host school, Savannah Arts Academy.
