OH YEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Summer time is here! Yes it is. Those days are here when you step out for a run, walk or workout and before you even get warmed up you're covered in sweat. Welcome to the South! I just got back from Austin from a trip to see Asics and the runs I did out there were sweaty, but I described it this way to fellow store owner who lives in Phoenix. Having lived in Austin it’s this simple to me, when running in Texas the heat feels like it’s burning your skin, in the real South Savannah, you're just wet, and sweaty. I will take the wet and sweaty anytime over burning skin, and having put in thousands of miles in and around Austin, I enjoy running much better in the heat of the summer in Savannah.
So what’s the catch or the point? Put some water out along your runs now if you don’t already. Run in loops so you can get back home or to a designated point where you have fluids for added energy or recovery. When you put out water put some dry fresh socks with it, nothing says reenergizing like a pair of dry socks when you’re running in the summer. Purchase a heart rate monitor to use as your own coach, and keep up with your core body temperature. Yes, you might run slower, but it all counts, listen to the heart rate monitor and you won’t feel so drained after the run and you will find that recovery will be much better from day to day.
Quality over quantity if you want, but baby yourself in the summer time when you're training, you can get the same amount of miles in, train for your fall marathon and keep up with the training. Pay attention to all the signs your body is giving you as you run in this heat, whether it’s in the morning, middle of the day, or in the evening, running through heat will not make you tougher, it just makes you hotter.
